Indeed, CODA is the first streaming film to win Best Picture, breaking through a ceiling that Netflix has continually struggled with year after year, including this year when the evening’s seeming frontrunner, The Power of the Dog, nearly went home empty-handed save for a major Oscar win for Jane Campion as Best Director. The tides were clearly turning, too, after CODA unexpectedly beat Campion and Power of the Dog in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. It was also a significant night for Dune, which picked up six technical Oscars, including in major categories like Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing. Although if you watched live, it was hard to notice the last two since both categories were inexplicably announced before the telecast. And one of the reasons the awards were apparently not shown live was to make room for the Academy’s already infamous “#OscarsFanFavorite” award, which seemed designed to award the most popular movies of the year–say Dune or Spider-Man: No Way Home–yet went to… Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead? So yes, an Oscars like no other! Winners are below.
